Grades 9-12

Grade 9-12 Programs:

High School group programs can be catered to the content needs of the teacher and the size of the group. We welcome high school groups on campus as well as requests for geologists to visit school classrooms. Please contact the GES Outreach Coordinator (mckinneymuseum@appstate.edu ) for more information.

Visiting the GES Facilities on Campus

A typical 1 hour visit to the McKinney Geology Teaching Museum includes a scavenger hunt and interactive activities around the museum, as well as a walk through the Fred Webb Jr. Rock Garden, both lead by Geology faculty and students. During rainy visits, the Rock Garden will be substituted by other indoor exhibits such as the Rock Wall.

A 2 hour visit would also include a special session with a geologist in one of the labs and will consist of a presentation, demo or lab activity (based on availability).

Please note that because the facilities are housed inside an academic building where classes are held throughout the day, our indoor space is limited. Contact our Outreach Coordinator at mckinneymuseum@appstate.edu to book tours and discuss options based on the size of your group.

1 Day Internship

We also offer a one-day internship opportunity for students in Grades 9-11. This "internship" provides high school students the opportunity to spend a day on the Appalachian State University campus, attending classes and lab in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences to get a taste of what being a geoscience major in college is like.
