Loren A. Raymond

Dr. Loren Raymond joined the faculty of Appalachian State University in 1972. Prior to his retirement in 2007, Dr. Raymond taught Earth Materials, Petrology, and the Introduction to Physical Geology courses; three of fifteen different courses taught during his career.  He was the Chairperson of the Department in 1982-83 and 1994-2000. Dr. Raymond was the first recipient of Appalachian's College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding teacher of the Year Award in 1990 and was a charter member of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers. Dr. Raymond's specialty is Petrotectonics, the use of rocks to decipher the history of mountain belts. Dr. Raymond edited a Geological Society of America volume on mélanges, authored the text Petrology: The Study of Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic Rocks (now in its second edition), and wrote the Petrography Laboratory Manual (3rd ed.).  He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America.
