Rockin' NC Workshop

The Rockin' North Carolina workshop for educators is a joint collaboration between Appalachian Geological and Environmental Sciences and Vulcan Materials with the goal of supporting earth science education in North Carolina.

This professional development opportunity is geared specifically towards 4th grade educators as all activities will align with 4th grade NCES. For any questions related to this, please contact Marta Toran (toranml@appstate.edu). 

Materials developed for this workshop will center around the topic of rocks and minerals of importance in the state and will include sampling of classroom activities looking at:

  • Rock and mineral identification
  • Uses of earth materials
  • Rocks and minerals of economic value in NC 
  • Mining practices, future of mining and sustainability

The one day workshop will include a trip to the Vulcan Quarry in Boone, NC as a field trip destination for 4th grade classes.

-LEARN HOW TO IDENTIFY ROCKS AND MINERALS WITH IDEAS FOR THEIR LESSONS

-RECEIVE A READY-TO-GO CLASSROOM KIT FOR TEACHING ABOUT ROCKS AND MINERALS OF NC

-TAKE A TOUR OF THE VULCAN QUARRY IN BOONE/ FIND OUT ABOUT FREE FIELD TRIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR CLASSES

-RECEIVE 0.6 CEU CREDITS, A T-SHIRT AND $65 STIPEND
