Welcome to the new Environmental Sciences Program Director, Dr. Cynthia Liutkus-Pierce

The Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences is pleased to announce that after an internal search Dr. Cynthia Liutkus-Pierce has accepted the position of Director of the Environmental Science Program effective January 1st, 2018. Dr. Liutkus-Pierce's research uses sedimentology and geochemistry to reconstruct ancient and modern environmental conditions. She has worked on projects in North Carolina, Tennessee, New York, and Nevada, with a more recent focus on research in East Africa. Dr. Liutkus-Pierce is a National Geographic Explorer, a fellow of the Explorers Club, was runner-up to the UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, is a member of Appalachian State University’s Academy of Outstanding Teachers, and was named Teacher of the Year in the College of Arts and Sciences in 2017. The Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences looks forward to working with Dr. Liutkus-Pierce and the approximately 90 environmental science majors as we work towards a sustainable future.
